Goals and Objectives
Goals of the residency program
- To provide learning experiences based on measurable objectives for the education of residents during a five-year training program
- To promote a broad understanding of the role of general surgery as it relates to other medical disciplines
- To integrate the sciences applicable to general surgery with clinical experiences in a progressive manner
- To provide the general surgery resident with progressive responsibilities, commencing with patient care and progressing to complete patient management
- To develop the teaching skills of residents in general surgery
- To develop the skills necessary for surgical problem solving
- To develop professional leadership and management skills
- To foster lifelong learning in medical education
- To develop interest in and understanding of research in general surgery
- To prepare the resident to meet certification requirements of the AOA through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and ABS American Board of Surgery
Objectives
- Manage surgical problems, based on the knowledge of basic and clinical studies
- Use critical thinking in making effective decisions for patient management
- Demonstrate proficiency in the psychomotor skills required of a competent general surgeon
- Teach basic surgical skills to medical students, interns, and other residents within the context of the residency program
- Collaborate effectively, and share knowledge with colleagues and allied health care professionals
- Make sound, ethical, and legal judgments in the practice of general surgery
- Provide cost-effective care to general surgical patients
- Educate patients and their families concerning health care needs
- Participate in opportunities for continuing education to promote personal and professional growth
- Read, interpret, and participate in clinical research, where appropriate
- Participate in community and professional organization
