Program Aims

The goal of our residency program is to develop professional, board-certified psychiatrists capable of providing competent, independent and professional mental health care services. Our residents will have the skills to diagnose and treat psychiatric illness in patients of diverse backgrounds as well as the ability to create specific, individual and comprehensive treatment plans.

Aims:

  • We will promote a growth mindset and establish a warm, welcoming, and generous learning milieu.
  • We will help trainees identify their passions and encourage them to pursue their interests.
  • Our training environment will foster enthusiasm for the field of psychiatry, lifelong learning, leadership, and service to others.
  • We will recruit and train residents from a variety of backgrounds that are interested in providing mental health care to underserved populations.
  • Residents will develop expertise in managing complex psychiatric illness by caring for the underserved community of Jackson, with patients burdened by multitudes of adverse social determinants of health, and varying constellations of psychiatric, substance use, and medical complexity.
  • We will recruit and retain faculty who are dedicated to teaching and invested in our residents, and provide opportunities for professional development.
  • We will be committed to raising mental health awareness, understanding, and access to mental health care within the hospital, local community, and region.
  • We will prepare residents to participate and contribute to behavioral health scholarship.
  • We will prepare residents to deliver culturally informed, collaborative, financially responsible, and innovative care.
