EMS Fellowship

Henry Ford Hospital is proud to offer offers a 1 year EMS Fellowship through the Division of EMS which is part of the Department of Emergency Medicine. The fellowship has been approved by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since 2024. Prior to that, most of the EMS Fellowship faculty gained experience by serving as faculty for another local EMS fellowship. Henry Ford Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine is a long-standing emergency medicine residency with an established training and research program. Henry Ford Hospital exists within Henry Ford Health, the second largest medical system in the State of Michigan, including 13 hospitals and 7 different emergency medicine residencies.

Clinical/Oversight Experience

The fellow will gain clinical experience via ride time with Detroit Fire Division of EMS, MedStar (a private EMS agency that provides 911 response and interfacility transport in the Detroit area), and other local agencies. In addition, the fellow will gain clinical experience during shifts utilizing the Detroit Medical Control Authority (DEMCA) physician response vehicle. There are over 120,000 911 patient encounters in Eastern Wayne County per year.

Most medical oversight experiences will take place via DEMCA, a quasi-governmental organization that provides medical control all EMS agencies in the eastern half of Wayne County including Detroit Fire Division of EMS. DEMCA oversees more than 120,000 911 patient encounters throughout the year. Fellows will also gain other experience with MedStar, an urban, private EMS agency that is partly owned by Henry Ford Health. The fellow will gain further exposure through our academic affiliation with Michigan State University and via a network of EMS physicians and other stakeholders throughout Henry Ford Health. Our faculty hold leadership positions in 4 local MCAs and Region 2 South.

The fellow schedule will include 4 shifts per month at Henry Ford Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Flight

Henry Ford Health operates a ground and flight transfer and critical care transport in conjunction with MedStar. This includes a Bell EC-135 rotor wing ambulance. Fellows will have the opportunity to schedule ride time as a third rider with the flight program. In addition, there will be multiple opportunities to participate in protocol development, QA/QI, run review, and clinician education.

MIH

Henry Ford Health operates a robust MIH program. Paramedics provide post-acute, PCP initiated, and scheduled care to patients in the community with the assistance of on call virtual primary care physicians. In addition, paramedics are trained to use portable ultrasound devices. The fellow will have the opportunity to gain clinical experience via ride time with MIH paramedics in addition to helping to provide oversight and education.

Education

The fellow will have the opportunity to educate EMS clinicians through the paramedic and EMT training programs offered by EMS agencies with which the EMS Division is affiliated and EMS educational programs delivered by Henry Ford Health. They will be expected to assist with the delivery of longitudinal EMS education for emergency medicine residents and medical students as well as the administration of the EMS elective.

Research

Henry Ford Hospital has a strong history of conducting innovative and practice changing research in the field of emergency medicine. The Department of Emergency Medicine offers infrastructure and support for research activities, including travel funding for fellow research presentations, over 25 dedicated research staff, and biostatistical support. The Division of EMS is very active in multiple ongoing research projects that involve topics such as cardiac arrest, ultrasound in EMS, out of hospital ventilation, and disparities in EMS care.

Mass Gatherings/Disaster

The Detroit Metro Area is home to more than 4.3 million people, the 14th largest in the country, and the largest metro area on America’s northern border. As such, it is host to multiple exciting mass gathering, most of which our EMS fellow has the opportunity to assist in the planning, execution, and post-event analysis.

Henry Ford Health is the medical services provider for all four Detroit professional sport teams- the Tigers, Lions, Redwings, and Pistons, in addition to Medstar providing medical care for Little Caesar’s Arena, the venue for the Pistons and Redwings in addition to many concerts and other events, providing a lot of opportunity for involvement for those interested in mass gathering medicine. In addition, Henry Ford Health provides medical oversight and medical care for many large events it the Detroit area, including the PGA Rocket Mortgage Classic and the Detroit Free Press Marathon.

Emergency management leadership for the entire Henry Ford Health system is headquartered at Henry Ford Hospital. The fellow will gain experience by participating in regular committee meetings in addition to planning and participating in local, regional, and health system disaster drills and table top exercises in addition to assisting in the response to disasters as needed.
