Hematology Oncology Fellowship

Welcome

Henry Ford St. John Hospital's Hematology and Oncology Subspecialty Fellow Training Program is a three-year combined Hematology and Oncology Program targeting qualified fellows each year.

We are permanently approved for 12 positions total.

Training includes 2 sites, the primary sponsoring site Henry Ford St. John Hospital and a participating site Henry Ford Warren Hospital.

The training program comprises: 9 months of in-hospital clinical rotations, 21 months of electives and subspecialty rotations, 6 months of research and scholarly activities. Continuity clinics and a variety of conferences and lectures throughout the 3-year program.

Each Hematology-Oncology Fellow receives support to attend one professional meeting each year, such as the American Society of Hematology or American Society of Clinical Oncology. Each fellow is nominated for professional membership in these Societies.

    • Dahlia Sano, MD (2018) Went to MD Anderson in Houston, Texas for a one year fellowship in Lymphoma. Dr. Sano is now an Assistant Professor/Lymphoma Specialist at Karmanos Cancer Institute here in Detroit, Michigan
    • Uqba Khan, MD (2018) Joined Weill Cornell as a Junior Faculty Member in the GI department. Dr. Khan became Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine-Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University and an attending Physician at New York-Presbyterian/Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.
    • Abishek Seth, MD (2019) Joined Prevea Health at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, WI

    • Jason Mouabbi, MD (2020) Went to Baylor in Houston Texas for a one year fellowship in Breast Cancer. Dr. Mouabbi is now a faculty member at MD Anderson in the Breast Oncology Department.

Academic In-patient Hematology Service

  • This Academic Hematology Consultation Service provides consultations for patients in Henry Ford St. John Hospital
  • The service also provides care for patients admitted to the academic inpatient hematology service
  • Three months total
  • Distributed over 3 years of training

Academic In-patient Oncology Service

  • It is an academic oncology consultation service that provides consultations on patients with cancer who are hospitalized in Henry Ford St. John Hospital
  • The service also provides care for patients admitted to the academic inpatient oncology service
  • Three months total
  • Distributed over 3 years of training

Academic General Hematology Oncology Henry Ford Warren Hospital

  • General hematology oncology Consultation Service provides consultations for patients at Henry Ford Warren Hospital
  • The service also provides care for patients admitted to the academic inpatient hematology/oncology service
  • 3 months total
  • Distributed over 3 years of training

Research/Scholarly Activities

  • Fellows will have 6 months dedicated for research distributed over 3 years of training (2 per year)
  • Fellows expected to meet with Dr. Kafri the first Friday morning of the research month to present an overview of their proposed project and the selected mentor.
  • There are multiple research opportunities available both within the Department of Hematology and Oncology or within other departments
  • This time can be used for scholarly activities like quality improvement projects etc.
  • Fellows will maintain one half day/week of continuity clinic during their research time.
  • The focus of the research project can be clinical, epidemiological, health policy, translational, basic or other areas if it is of significant educational value for research training in hematology and oncology.

Teaching Conferences

  • Journal club (twice a month) 2nd and 4th Tuesday noon
  • Fellows case conference (The fourth Monday and every Friday morning)
  • New drug presentation twice a month on Friday morning
  • Didactic lecture series (weekly)
