Chairman's Statement

Anchored in Detroit, Henry Ford Health’s Department of Psychiatry serves the healthcare needs of the broader southeast Michigan community. Guided by our mission to improve people’s lives through excellence in the science and art of health care and healing, our department strives to prepare the health care workforce in contemporary and near-future models of care. Our training program provides a nurturing and an intellectually stimulating environment for residents to become future psychiatrists rooted in the core values of compassion, innovation, respect for our communities, and driving reliable results.

Henry Ford is a leader in education, and our department is one of the largest and most diverse academic sites for psychiatric education in the nation. Henry Ford is a past-recipient of the ACGME and Arnold P. Gold Foundation DeWitt C. Baldwin, Jr. Award which recognizes institutions with residency programs that are excellent in fostering a compassionate learning environment and patient-centered care, leading to the personal and professional development of trainees. The department is a proud recipient of Joint Commission’s Ernest Amory Codman Award and the American Psychiatric Association’s Gold Achievement Award for excellence in clinical services. Our integrated psychiatric clinical services factored favorably in Henry Ford Health’s selection as a recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Birthplace of Zero Suicide and Perfect Depression Care Model, our department is a leader in clinical and educational innovation. Henry Ford’s psychodermatology clinic is one of the nation’s first teaching clinic in delivering highly sought after specialty integrated care to patients with significant comorbidities while providing an excellent learning opportunity to residents in dermatology and psychiatry. The department’s wellness program continues to serve as a model curriculum for training programs across different specialties. We strive to offer balanced and cutting-edge training; besides core rotations, residents have access to a broad array of electives. For their community experience, critical to their growth as well-rounded clinicians, invested in compassionate service and healthy communities, residents have the privilege of working at Cabrini Clinic- the nation’s oldest free clinic. Lastly, our biggest strength is our people- our teaching faculty, residents, and support staff who are invested in each other’s professional growth and wellness.
