Transplant Oncology

Transplant Oncology is a relatively new concept in the world of transplant medicine, being pioneered at Henry Ford Hospital and at leading transplant centers worldwide. In specific cases on liver cancer, metastatic colon cancer, and others, the transplant surgeon is part of a multidisciplinary team, part of the “brain trust,” that battles and attempts to resolve the cancer.

At Henry Ford, our transplant team collaborates with medical, surgical, and radiation oncology teams to identify and provide transplant opportunities in those cases where transplant can help a primary or metastatic liver cancer patient become cancer-free.

Other cancers that can be candidates for transplant oncology include:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma
  • Unresectable perihilar cholangiocarcinoma
  • Unresectable colorectal cancer liver metastasis
  • Unresectable neuroendocrine tumor
  • Unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma
  • Unresectable mesenteric desmoid tumor
