As part of your treatment plan, your care team may discuss your eligibility to participate in one or more clinical trials. These studies help researchers discover whether a new treatment or technique may be more effective than the current standard of care. Watchful waiting, or active surveillance, is another approach that involves monitoring the symptoms of prostate cancer. Monitoring is typically done every six months and includes a digital-rectal exam (DRE) and a PSA blood test. If symptoms increase, testing or treatments may be needed.

Metastatic prostate cancer

Metastatic or advanced prostate cancer means that cancer cells have spread from the prostate tumor to different parts of the body. The disease is also called Stage 4 prostate cancer, and there are two categories for it. In Stage 4A, prostate cancer cells are found in the nearby lymph nodes. In Stage 4B, the cancer cells have spread to distant lymph nodes, bones, lungs, liver or other organs.

Treatment for metastatic prostate cancer

Metastatic prostate cancer requires specialized care. At Henry Ford, our expert oncologists offer ways to slow the spread of metastatic cancer, prolong life and control symptoms. For patients who have limited treatment options or who have previously received other anticancer treatments, our specialists may recommend an FDA-approved therapy called Pluvicto. This drug delivers targeted radiation to damage and kill prostate cancer cells. To find out if Pluvicto is right for you, make an appointment with a prostate cancer specialist at Henry Ford.
