Local Orchard & Winery Celebrates 10 Years of Game On Cancer with Lions-Themed Corn Maze
DETROIT – The only people with more grit than the Detroit Lions are the 23,000 Metro Detroiters who tackle a new cancer diagnosis each year. To raise money to help those cancer warriors, a Macomb County orchard and winery has created a corn maze featuring Henry Ford Health’s Game On Cancer program and the Detroit Lions logo.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Game On Cancer, the partnership between Henry Ford and the Detroit Lions, that raises money to alleviate barriers that cancer patients face on the road to recovery and fund research to find a cure.
“As we celebrate this 10-year milestone, we’re grateful for the unwavering dedication of our volunteers and donors and steadfast partnerships with the Detroit Lions and organizations like Westview Orchards & Winery,” said Mary Jane “MJ” Vogt, Executive Vice President & Chief Development Officer at Henry Ford Health. “With their ongoing support, we look forward to expanding our reach and continuing to transform the cancer care landscape.”
Westview Orchards & Winery carved “Henry Ford Health Game On Cancer” and a giant Detroit Lions logo into a 5-acre corn field to create the maze. Open to the public on August 31, Westview is located at 65075 Van Dyke in Washington, Mich. Westview will donate proceeds from the weekend of Sept. 21 and 22 to Game On Cancer.
“We’ve been doing corn mazes since 1994 and this was a really great opportunity to team up with an organization with a great cause,” said Westview owner Katrina Roy.
The idea to support the cause came from Westview employee and Game On Cancer volunteer Sandy Kincaid.
Over the past decade Game On Cancer has eased the financial strain on local cancer patients and their families, helping to pay for essentials like housing, food, utility bills, transportation to appointments and more, while also supporting care programs and fueling groundbreaking cancer research.
In its 10 years of operation, Game On Cancer has achieved remarkable milestones, raising $8.7 million in funds and supporting more than 11,000 patients and their families throughout their treatment. Last year alone, donors, sponsors and volunteers came together to fund more than 1,000 rides to appointments; opened access to over 5,000 appointments for supportive therapies; and gave hope to tomorrow’s patients by driving the most advanced research projects.
