For more than 60 years, the Henry Ford Allergy and Clinical Immunology division has been dedicated to training of world-class physicians.

In 1947, Dr. Joseph Schaeffer sought to create an allergy and immunology fellowship with a unique balance of research and clinical training. This two-year training program is open to highly qualified pediatricians and internists interested in obtaining board certification in allergy and immunology.

Each year two fellows are accepted to begin training devoted to developing expertise in the management of patients with allergic and immunologic disorders as well as dedicated time to perform high-quality research. Clinical rotations at three hospitals and three outpatient offices ensure exposure to a wide range of patients with diverse pathology. All fellows are enrolled in a graduate level immunology course taught at neighboring Wayne State University.

Our program mission:

To nourish the intellectual curiosity of tomorrow's allergists and so promote the life-long pursuit of learning and compassionate care to our patients.

From the Program Director

Nageotte Christian MD

Dear Prospective Allergy and Immunology Physician,

Thank you for considering Henry Ford Health as a potential destination for your Allergy and Immunology training.

While it may sound cliché, what truly sets our program apart is the people—our staff, fellows, faculty, and patients. Every day, I am surrounded by hardworking teammates who genuinely care for one another, who enjoy working together, and are committed to excellence in service to our Detroit community. Our patients are equally special; we serve a diverse and gracious population across five distinct clinical sites in Metropolitan Detroit (Detroit, Dearborn, Novi, Royal Oak, Sterling Heights), providing care, education, and support to those in need.

We seek fellows who share our values at Henry Ford Health—those who are driven, compassionate, team-oriented, and eager to grow into allergists and immunologists that push themselves and lean into complexity, whether as private practitioners, clinician-educators, or academic researchers. Our goal is to support your aspirations and help you thrive in your chosen career path.

Our program is uniquely structured compared to most to offer approximately 55% clinical training and 30% research exposure during both fellowship years. This longitudinal approach emphasizes continued clinical mastery during the second year, and meaningful research opportunities that start in the first month. Fellows gain experience at our Henry Ford Health outpatient clinics both in their own continuity clinic as well as alongside faculty clinics, inpatient consults at Henry Ford Main in Detroit and Henry Ford Health-West Bloomfield, and through clinical rotations at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, where the focus is on pediatric immunodeficiency and inpatient pediatric consults.

Our faculty specialize in a wide range of areas, including:

  • Drug Allergy (e.g., chemotherapy desensitization, advanced drug testing)
  • Severe Asthma
  • Contact Dermatitis (complex patch testing)
  • Severe Eczema
  • Immunodeficiency
  • Cluster Immunotherapy
  • Food Allergy (oral food challenges).

In addition, fellows benefit from off-service rotations with Dermatology (Contact Dermatitis), Otolaryngology, Rheumatology, and Pulmonology.

We offer both standard and unique didactic experiences to enhance learning, such as:

  • Fellow Bootcamp
  • Primary Board Study Elective (One Half-day dedicated for self-directed study for primary boards in July and August for first-year fellows)
  • Weekly Educational Seminars (alternating between Henry Ford Health and Children’s Hospital of Michigan faculty)
  • Abbas “Active Learning” Immunology Class
  • Auditing Wayne State University’s immunology class (using Janeway)
  • Board Review Classes
  • Dedicated Board Review Week (a week with reduced clinical activities for ITE preparation)

I hope this letter provides a glimpse of what makes our program special and encourages you to consider applying to Henry Ford Health. Thank you for your interest, reach out to our coordinator if we can offer any further information, and I wish you the best of luck in your future career!
