Construction Around the Cancer Pavilion Rescheduled for March
Destination: Grand construction work on W. Milwaukee Avenue, originally planned to start in January, is now anticipated to begin the week of March 10. The work includes weekend overnight water main tie-in and utility infrastructure installation that will not affect water usage inside the Brigitte Harris Cancer Pavilion, and only minimal traffic impacts expected during normal business hours.
Also expected to start Monday, March 31, the north portion of Sterling Street at W. Milwaukee Avenue will be completely closed for approximately a week to facilitate work to connect sanitary and storm pipes to the existing sanitary sewer and stormwater systems. As always, detour signage and flaggers will direct traffic around the construction project.
The southern bike lane on W. Milwaukee Avenue will remain closed through April for construction work related to the new Central Energy Hub.
Construction barriers and fencing will remain in place throughout the duration of the construction project around the Cancer Pavilion to ensure everyone’s safety around the work area.
Progress Update on Destination: Grand Facilities
Despite the frigid temperatures so far this winter, construction crews continue the progress at Destination: Grand.
The new parking structure, located south of the Brigitte Harris Cancer Pavilion, has seen considerable progress with the structure’s peak height of seven stories reached, marking a major milestone. Once the new hospital tower opens in 2029, the parking structure will offer more than 1,500 parking spaces for patients, visitors and Henry Ford Health team members. A total of 15,000 cubic yards of concrete have been used to construct this crucial part of our project. That’s about 1,500 truckloads of concrete or about three-and-a-half Olympic pools full of concrete!
Watch our video here to see how the structure is taking shape and learn what goes into a project of this scale.
The site of the new hospital facility is also teeming with activity from our Destination: Grand construction team. With the new hospital’s foundational footings nearly complete, crews continue to pour concrete for the remaining caissons (or footings) that will be constructed on the north side of W. Grand Boulevard; those will help support the east skywalk bridge that will connect the new hospital tower to the existing hospital campus. Overall, more than 18,000 yards of concrete have been poured as part of this project. That’s the equivalent of 1,644 truckloads of concrete or about the size of five-and-a-half Olympic swimming pools.
Our crews are also completing the demolition of existing buildings on the site, with four of the five buildings already demolished and all the debris removed. These buildings included the former Young Supply retail building at the corner of Baltimore and Trumbull, with the Young Supply warehouse in the process of being demolished.
Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences Research Center Progress
Following months of below-ground preparations, the Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences Research Center now has steel beams in the air. The seven-story, 335,000-square-facility nestled between the Lodge Freeway and Third Avenue will require nearly 3,000 tons or almost six million pounds of steel, about 4,900 steel beams and more than 48,000 bolts to build the steel superstructure.
DTE is currently conducting a neighborhood gas main renewal project which will continue through April. This work is not part of Henry Ford Health’s Future of Health project; however, it’s taking place near One Ford Place, Henry Ford Health Center for Athletic Medicine, the Baltimore Parking Garage, and Henry Ford Second Avenue Medical Center. Henry Ford Health visitors and neighbors should expect intermittent lane closures in this area during the duration of this DTE project.
