Concussion Clinic

Every year, the Center for Disease Control estimates that 5%-10% of athletes will experience a concussion injury in any given sport season. Many of these injuries go unreported and undiagnosed, which leaves these athletes continuing to suffer from symptoms as they return too quickly to their normal daily activities like school, gym class, work, and sports. This can lead to prolonged symptoms, mood changes, academic issues, and worst of all, put these athletes at risk for experiencing another head injury before they are fully recovered.

This is why Henry Ford has assembled a comprehensive team of sports medicine physicians, neuropsychologists, neurologists, and athletic trainers to evaluate both the physical and cognitive components of athletes who have suffered a sports related concussion.  Our multidisciplinary approach allows for personalized evaluation, targeted treatment, and an individualized, safe, return to competition plan for each athlete. Our Sports Concussion Clinic is the only one of its kind serving Southeastern Michigan, offered at the William Clay Ford Center for Athletic Medicine in Detroit and the Henry Ford Medical Center- Columbus in Novi.

What to expect during your appointment

You will be evaluated by multiple providers from our team in one appointment to address all aspects of a concussion injury. The evaluation includes, but is not limited to: cognitive function, memory, reaction timing, balance, mood, musculoskeletal and vestibular ocular function.

Concussions cannot be seen on x-ray, MRI, or CT scan. Because there is no definitive way to diagnose a concussion; our concussion specialists utilize a variety of in-office assessment tools. Although there is no quick cure for a concussion, we can evaluate and treat your symptoms to provide you with relief while your brain recovers.

Henry Ford Sports Concussion Clinic experts recognize that you want to get back in the game NOW, but also know that concussions can alter your quality of life and cause long term consequences. We will get you on the right track to recovery; which is designed to fit you, your needs, and your sport.  We will provide you with a safe return to play plan that will get you back to your sport as quickly, but also, as safely as possible.  That’s why it is important to be educated on concussions, and take the necessary time to recover.  For student athletes, we will also evaluate the need for school accommodations, and provide recommendations on return to learn.

All sports concussions are serious. Don’t hide it, report it. The best way to get back in the game is to get help and take time to recover.
