Henry Ford Rehab: Foundations of Acute Care Rehab
In this course package, we offer foundational content for therapists practicing in acute care. We provide information to enhance the delivery of care in this environment at an introductory level through a virtual format. Registration for this course also includes written Lab Values & Vital Signs Reference Manual.
Principles of Value Based Care: This course will provide an overview of what it means to practice value-based care in the acute care hospital setting. Value-based documentation and productivity will also be reviewed.
Lab Values and Vital Signs, including Mobility as the 5th Vital Sign: This course will review why lab values and vital signs such as hemoglobin, potassium, glucose, blood pressure, heart rate and others are essential clinical tools to determine appropriateness for rehab interventions of acutely ill patients. Normal and abnormal values, as well as steps clinicians can take to monitor the patient’s response will be discussed. Finally, patient care case studies will be presented and are designed to help the learner problem solve and improve clinical decision making related to labs and vitals.
Supplemental Oxygen Basics: This course is designed for physical and occupational therapists and assistants and is meant to provide an overview of various supplemental oxygen delivery devices commonly seen in general acute care practice, and to discuss the titration of oxygen during therapy interventions via case scenarios. The course provides a review of the difference between ventilation and respiration, describes supplemental oxygen flow in liters per minute in relation to fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2), and discusses the clinical significance of the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve for the provision of supplemental oxygen.
Lines, Tubes, Drains, & Specialty Tests in Acute Care: Providing rehabilitation services in acute care is known to be influenced by the patient’s environment and their medical needs. Therapists working in acute care need a strong understanding of the importance of various lines & drains in order to safely provide care that maintains the integrity of necessary medical devices. In addition, therapists should understand common medical procedures and how the patient may be impacted after procedures are performed. This course will provide an overview of lines, tubes, & drains commonly encountered by therapists working in acute care, and the impact on therapy evaluation and intervention. Medical tests and procedures with common post-procedure restrictions and mobility considerations will also be reviewed.
