This Cranberry Apple Crumble is a simple Heart Smart® dessert that offers those fall and winter flavors we all love — baked apples and tart cranberries — without the extreme amounts of saturated fat and sugar featured in your beloved holiday desserts, like pies and cookies. It’s also a great example of just letting the natural sweetness of the fruit really shine. Here, it’s is enhanced by just the right amount of sugar and a crunchy crumble featuring heart-healthy oats, brown sugar and margarine.

Cranberry Apple Crumble

Yield: 10 servings
Ingredients:
Vegetable oil cooking spray
8 cups apples, peeled and sliced (such as McIntosh or Paula Red)
1 cup fresh or frozen whole cranberries
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup dry oatmeal
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 Tablespoons margarine
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray an 11 x 7-inch baking dish with cooking spray. In a large bowl, mix apples, cranberries and granulated sugar. Place apple mixture in prepared pan. In a separate bowl, combine oatmeal, flour and brown sugar and toss to combine. Cut in margarine with a pastry blender or two knives until crumbly. Spoon crumble mixture evenly over apples. Bake 35 to 45 minutes.
