- First in metro Detroit to perform a kidney transplant
1971
- Henry Ford surgeon Dr. Stanley Dienst is a founding member of the Transplant Society of Michigan network for sharing donor kidneys
1973
- First in Michigan to perform a kidney transplant for a diabetic patient
1985
- First Detroit hospital to perform a heart transplant
1987
- First pancreas transplant performed at Henry Ford Hospital
1989
- First in Detroit to perform a liver transplant
1991
- First in Michigan to use peripheral blood stem cell for transplantation
1994
- First in Detroit to perform a lung transplant
1996
- One of the first in Michigan, and only two dozen in the U.S., to perform a cross-racial living kidney transplant
- First in Michigan to perform a split-liver transplant
2000
- First in Michigan to perform adult–to-adult living donor split-liver transplant
2004
- The Henry Ford Transplant team is established, with Dr. Marwan Abouljoud as director
2005
- Developed first active laparoscopic liver surgery program in Michigan, laying the groundwork for laparoscopic living liver donor surgery three years later
- One of a few U.S. centers to offer laparoscopic donor kidney removal with the daVinci Robotic Surgical System
2008
- First in Michigan to perform laparoscopic living liver donor surgery
- First in the U.S. to incorporate patient and peer support by launching the Transplant Living Community
2009
- Henry Ford Hospital marks its 1,000th liver transplant
- First in Michigan to participate in a domino donor kidney transplant, in which eight people receive a kidney from eight unrelated donors at four hospitals in four states
2010
- First and only center in Michigan performing modified multivisceral (stomach, small bowel and pancreas) transplant
2013
- First in Michigan to perform lung-liver transplant
2014
- First in Michigan to perform robotic kidney transplant
- Michigan’s first double-cord blood transplant performed at Henry Ford Hospital
- First in Michigan to use Donation after Cardiac Death for lung transplant
2015
- First adult heart-liver transplant in Michigan
2016
- First in the Midwest and third in the world to use the TransMedic Liver Perfusion machine for liver transplant
