Women’s heart disease: risk factors
Women and men share common risk factors for heart disease. These include:
- Age
- Diet
- Obesity
- Inactivity
- Smoking
- Family history of heart disease
- Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and calcium buildup in your arteries
But women also need to consider gynecological history. You are at increased risk if you have experienced:
- Fertility treatments
- Pregnancy-related high blood pressure disorders
- Pre-term delivery before 36 weeks of pregnancy
- Birth of a low birth weight baby

Heart attack symptoms in women
Tightness or squeezing in the chest is a common sign of a heart attack, especially for men. Women often have additional symptoms. You may not recognize these symptoms as signs of a heart attack and may attribute them to something else. Listen to your body and seek medical attention right away if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Chest pressure
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Abdominal (belly) pain
- Headaches
- Sweating
- Back pain
