Case Volume

Our colorectal surgery fellowship offers a large volume of surgical cases with broad- spectrum pathologies. Our faculty perform a total of 450 anorectal cases and 550 abdominal cases, including 200 laparoscopic and 200 robotic surgeries a year.

Surgical cases are well-balanced between laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. We also have ample open surgeries for urgent and re-do surgeries.

Robotic experience at Henry Ford Health is robust, and includes hemicolectomy with intracorporeal anastomosis, pelvic dissection, parastomal hernia repair, rectopexy, and robotic transanal minimally invasive surgery. The fellow will complete online modules, training on simulator, hands-on training for bedside assistance. Autonomy will be increased based on fellow’s progress and Fellowship Training Equivalency Certification will be provided by Intuitive, once criteria are met. Advanced robotic training course is available and the fellow is encouraged to attend the course in the winter.

Our case also includes hand-assisted laparoscopy, transanal endoscopic surgery (TEM), transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), Transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME), and natural orifice specimen extraction after colectomy (transrectal extraction).

We have abundant endoscopic volume. We perform more than 2,000 colonoscopies a year in Colon and Rectal Surgery Division.
