Testing
Henry Ford Health is home to some of the nation’s most innovative sports performance testing technology. Our athletic trainers use cutting-edge tools to assess your baseline athletic performance and strengths and weaknesses. We also perform ongoing testing throughout your training plan to track progress, compare results and give you the information you need to improve your performance.
Benchmark Performance Testing Tools Movement screening We evaluate your musculoskeletal health, checking your range of motion, posture, balance and muscle strength. This includes identifying any movement patterns or asymmetries that may affect your sports performance or put you at risk for injuries. Biomechanic labs Our two movement analysis labs feature high-speed digital cameras and the latest 3D software. We map a range of movements to identify injury risks and areas for improvement.
Our markerless motion-capture system allows you to perform sport-specific movements more naturally, which delivers more accurate results. A special force-plated floor helps us measure power, weight distribution, muscle balance and much more.
Speedzone® Our laser-based speed and agility testing system is the only one of its kind in the U.S. We evaluate reaction timing, endurance and hand-eye coordination. Human performance testing
Runners or other athletes with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions may benefit from testing in our Human Performance Clinic. Services include VO2 max (aerobic capacity) testing and body composition testing using the innovative BodPod® tool.
You’ll meet with a Henry Ford exercise physiologist from our preventive cardiology program for a specialized evaluation and exercise recommendations.
This testing is scheduled through and performed by our preventive cardiology department. Please call (313) 972-4039 to schedule.
Gait Lab analysis
Abnormalities in the way you walk and run can put you at risk for injury. Our gait lab features an instrumented treadmill equipped with force plates. These deliver real-time data on force, pressure, gait length, and left and right gait cycles, as well as foot and ankle strength.
We also use 3D motion-capture cameras to evaluate body mechanics such as posture, stride and balance.

Recovery
Recovery isn’t just about rehabilitating from an injury—it’s an essential part of any sports performance training program. If you rest and recover between competition and workouts, you can go further and faster during the next workout, ultimately making significant performance gains. You also greatly reduce your risk of an injury when you allow your body to heal after the stress of exercise. We offer the latest recovery tools and techniques for a comprehensive athletic performance plan.
Recovery Tools and Techniques Game Ready® therapy Temperature-controlled compression garments that circulate cold or hot water around any body part that needs rapid recovery. This technique reduces pain and swelling, making it ideal for post-injury recovery. Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) Our certified athletic trainers use special devices to perform deep-tissue manipulation. IASTM helps break up soft tissue adhesions and scar tissue that forms after an injury, surgery or overuse.
It also enhances blood flow to soft tissues, which speeds healing and recovery.
NormaTec® compression therapy Specialized boots and sleeves gently compress and massage your limbs to aid blood flow. This technique helps repair muscle tissue and reduce fatigue and soreness after a hard workout. AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill™
Our innovative treadmill helps you rehabilitate safely and at your own pace. A specialized belt allows you to walk or run without bearing your full body weight. You can recover from injuries in your knees or hips with less pain, reduced joint stress and less risk of re-injury.
Integrative medicine
Athletic trainers in our sports performance program work closely with our Center for Athletic Medicine and Henry Ford Health integrative medicine providers to ensure you get a comprehensive recovery plan.
You have access to a variety of services, including massage therapy, sports acupuncture and dry needling.
In addition to post-training recovery, we can help you establish good habits for sleep, nutrition, and stress reduction and mental well-being.
