Cognitive disorders we treat

Areas of expertise include:

  • Dementia and Alzheimer's disease

Dementia causes cognitive decline that’s significant enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Henry Ford offers a broad range of therapies to ease symptoms and help patients live the best possible quality of life. Get more information about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

  • Rare dementias

Experts at Henry Ford excel in detecting and treating rare dementias. These conditions occur at younger ages and progress faster than other types, which is why seeing a knowledgeable team is essential.

Types of rare dementia we treat include:

    • Early-onset Alzheimer’s starts as early as a person’s 30s.
    • Frontotemporal dementia affects part of the brain regulating mood, self-control and judgment.
    • Lewy body dementia is due to protein deposits that form on nerve cells and affect thinking and behavior.
    • Primary progressive aphasia develops in brain tissue controlling speech and language.
  • Dementia and developmental delay

People with Down syndrome and other developmental delays experience dementia differently. Assessments are more challenging and standard treatment typically does not work. Henry Ford understands the unique needs of these patients and offers specialized services to address them. Find out more about our Multidisciplinary Clinic for Dementia and Developmental Delay.

  • Normal pressure hydrocephalus

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) happens when fluid builds up in the brain. The signs of NPH are similar to symptoms of dementia. Henry Ford is one of the few programs in the region using a comprehensive approach to evaluate and treat it. Our expertise draws patients from across the region.

Conditions that mimic dementia

It’s natural to worry when you or a loved one experience signs of dementia. But these symptoms aren’t always as they seem. There are many other medical conditions that mimic dementia, such as:

  • Depression
  • Infections
  • Medication side effects
  • Mild cognitive impairment, age-related memory issues not associated with dementia
  • Sleep disorders
  • Thyroid disease
  • Vitamin deficiencies and digestive issues

When you come to a specialized program such as the one at Henry Ford, our thorough approach considers all possible causes. Our depth of experience enables us to correctly confirm or rule out dementia. And if it’s not dementia, we refer you to other experts for additional services that often reverse your symptoms.

Second opinions for cognitive decline

With cognitive disorders, the path toward healing isn’t always straightforward. If you have undergone assessments elsewhere and there are questions about your diagnosis or treatment plan, we’re happy to help.

Cognitive disorder specialists review your case and may perform additional assessments to confirm your diagnosis. We also discuss the therapies that are best for your needs. Request an appointment.
