Neurorehabilitation

Henry Ford Health’s neurorehabilitation team helps you regain the skills you need to return to a fuller, more independent life. Therapists support you and your caregivers as you overcome challenges resulting from a stroke, traumatic injury, surgery or neurologic condition.

Neurological rehabilitation: Why choose Henry Ford?

Highlights of our neurorehabilitation program include:

  • Expert providers: Our therapists are always exploring new and better ways to treat your neurologic challenges. Some of our therapists are certified Neurologic Clinical Specialists (NCS) by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists (ABPTS). Others have training from the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT BIG® and LSVT LOUD®) and PWR!Moves®.
  • Collaborative team: Our team includes physical, occupational and speech therapists. They work closely with board-certified neurologists, neurology nurses and other providers to maximize your mobility and function.
  • Supportive care: Therapists and social workers help with transitions from inpatient to outpatient care, transportation issues and home care. We also offer group exercise classes and support groups for patients and caregivers. We make sure you and your loved ones receive guidance and support.

Conditions we treat

We treat a wide range of neurologic conditions, including:

  • Amputations
  • Balance and vestibular (inner ear) disorders
  • Brain or spinal cord injury
  • Headaches and facial pain
  • Neuromuscular diseases like multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders
  • Stroke

Treatments we offer

Therapists work with you to meet goals that help you return to the activities that matter most. Whether that means walking your dog or returning to your job, we tailor treatment plans to fit your physical, cognitive and psychological needs.

During neurorehabilitation, we’ll work on:

  • Strength and conditioning: We use passive and active exercise, manual therapy and strength training to increase your mobility and endurance. You gradually return to weight-bearing activities. Stretching and range-of-motion exercises may help spasticity (abnormally tight muscles and involuntary movements).
  • Gait and balance: Therapists help you stand and walk with more stability. We provide assistive equipment when necessary and reduce your risk for falls. Gait training helps with stroke-related drop foot, bradykinesia (slow movements) or hypokinesia (small movements).
  • Sensory-motor retraining: We teach your brain and body to work together again. Biofeedback therapy helps us measure motor function and work on activities like reaching for and grasping objects.
  • Basic and instrumental activities of daily living (ADL and IDL): We rebuild the skills you need to perform daily tasks, from dressing and bathing to driving and shopping. Therapists help you set clear goals for returning to your life at home, work, school or in the community.
  • Cognitive function: Therapists help enhance your memory, focus and concentration. We also work through challenges with problem solving and decision making.
