Critical Care Anesthesiology Fellowship

Program Director: Dragos Galusca, M.D.
Program Coordinator: Shatoya Collins, B.S.

The Department of Anesthesiology offers a one-year, ACGME-approved Critical Care Anesthesiology fellowship, supported by Henry Ford Health, one of the largest critical care healthcare systems in the Midwest. The program has two positions available annually for highly qualified applicants interested in critical care medicine training. The Fellowship Program accepted its first fellow in July 2020, joining the twenty-year-old Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.

The fellowship provides a formal, intellectual environment for acquiring the knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, and attitude essential to the practice of critical care. The program is designed to provide advanced training to graduates of approved Anesthesiology Residency Programs. The program allows the anesthesiologist to acquire competence and expertise as a practitioner, consultant, and teacher in critical care. The program emphasizes scholarship, self-instruction, development of critical analysis of clinical problems. The program balances the ability to prioritize patient care needs with the ability to make appropriate decisions on complex surgical and medical problems in critically ill surgical patients. The training will also ensure the development of procedural and administrative skills required for the practice of Anesthesiology Critical Care. Completion of the program will provide the anesthesiologist with proficiency in managing critically ill patients, teaching critical care skills and in supervising critical care units.

The fellows rotate in Surgical Intensive care unit, Cardiovasular Intensive Care Unit, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit, and Ultrasound. Additional Electives are offered in Nephrology, Infectious disease, Palliative Care, Bronchosopy and Nutrition.

The competency-based education curriculum, simulations, structured teaching experiences, and scholarly activities and supervision/mentorship by experienced faculty complete the fellow experience.

Faculty

One of the greatest strengths of our program is the commitment to excellence of our faculty. Our multi-disciplinary faculty members include national experts in Anesthesiology, Surgery and Emergency Medicine and provide our fellows with a breadth of clinical and research expertise. Furthermore, each fellow strongly supported to work closely with Anesthesiology Critical Care faculty on scholarly activities and present their research at national conferences.

Didactics

The Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at Henry Ford has a multidisciplinary didactic program that instills a strong scientific base of knowledge and understanding in our fellows. We offer the following conferences:

  • Daily teaching rounds in the Intensive Care Units
  • Weekly Critical Care Medicine lectures
  • Monthly interdisciplinary Critical Care Medicine Journal Club/ Grand Rounds
  • Quality assessment/improvement and morbidity/mortality conferences
  • Visiting lecturers in critical care medicine
  • Interdisciplinary meetings

Ultrasound training

Our critical care ultrasound program continues to grow rapidly. We have state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment in each ICU, a high fidelity simulator (for both TEE and TTE) and have a robust educational program that continues to evolve. Each fellow participates in an intensive workshop with experts in critical care ultrasound comprised of both didactics and hands-on sessions with scanning on live models. We have a dedicated ultrasound didactic series and all fellows are encouraged to complete a dedicated ultrasound rotation to further develop advanced ultrasound skills. The program consists of faculty trained in ultrasound with additional certification in critical care ultrasound.
