When prescription lenses were first invented, they were all made of glass. Glass is a hard substance that's fairly resistant to scratching. No other options were available.

Today's lenses are much improved and our choices are almost limitless. They are lighter, stronger, tintable - some even darken automatically in the sun. Most lenses are made of a plastic resin called CR39. Others are made of special materials to achieve a thinner profile. Polycarbonate lenses are virtually bulletproof and ideal for sports or children - plus, they offer UV protection.

Remember to clean your eyeglasses regularly. Since small pieces of grit can scratch the lenses, it's wise to blow off the surface before cleaning. We recommend using a good quality optical cloth and a cleaner made specifically for eyeglasses, or pre-moistened cloths made for cleaning eyeglasses. Never use window cleaner on your eyeglasses, it can be too harsh for the surface.
