The Department of Family Medicine offers eight positions yearly for our three-year residency program supported by Henry Ford Health System, one of the largest and most respected integrated health care delivery systems in the country. Our residents utilize the latest technology and train from a highly skilled clinical staff at Henry Ford medical centers throughout southeastern Michigan as well as at Henry Ford Hospital, a nationally renowned specialty care, teaching and research institution that is the flagship of Henry Ford Health System.
Training at Henry Ford allows residents to feel secure that they are receiving all the organizational support necessary to succeed without losing the benefits of working for a smaller community hospital or medical center. They are taught the application of broad clinical skills in ambulatory, hospital, nursing facility, home and community training settings and gain experience in the application of those skills as practice partners in busy family practice centers, where patients and families identify them as their primary care providers. This allows residents to experience working in a smaller setting and develop longitudinal patient relationships while at the same time receiving the financial, educational, and organizational backing of a large integrated health care system.
Residents also benefit from being exposed to a wide spectrum and large quantity of patients, as our hospital and medical centers serve the metropolitan population of Detroit as well as the surrounding suburbs. This creates an exceptional environment for learning because of the multiple populations we serve and the breath of experience they provide.
Our staff also ensures that the benefits of this unique setting are optimized for resident education. As group practice physicians, Henry Ford doctors are extremely focused on education and are committed to taking residents and developing them into the very best Family Medicine physicians in the country. The residency program is well accepted within the hospital and has participated in large hospital-wide quality improvement projects. Residents from various programs work together side by side and often form lasting friendships.
