Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for residency?

Please submit your application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Are there any specific application requirements?

Please refer to ERAS application process guidelines.

When is your application deadline?

January 31 of the application season.

When do the interviews take place?

Interviews take place on select Saturdays, from December through January.

How many positions does your program have?

12 positions are offered at each of the four PGY levels.

Are graduates of Osteopathic medical schools eligible to apply?

Yes.  Henry Ford Hospital offers the four-year continuum in anesthesiology to both osteopathic and allopathic graduates.  Osteopathic physicians may apply to Henry Ford's dually accredited (AOA/ACGME) Transitional Program to satisfy the requirements for completion of an osteopathic internship, and apply to Henry Ford's ACGME accredited Anesthesiology Program for advanced clinical anesthesia training.  Frequently, interviews for both programs can be coordinated for the same day.

What is the minimum required USMLE score?

There is no minimum USMLE score needed to apply.  Traditionally, residents who have been accepted into the residency program have scores that average in the high 80's to mid 90's.

Are COMLEX results accepted in lieu of USMLE for Osteopathic medical graduates?

Yes, passage of COMLEX or USMLE is acceptable.

Do I need clinical experience in the United States to apply?

While US clinical experience is preferred, it is not mandatory to apply to the residency program.

Do I have to be ECFMG certified prior to my interview?

Interviews will be offered to all qualified applicants regardless of their ECFMG certification status.  Applicants must be ECFMG certified prior to the match ranking, typically by February.

What is the maximum number of years since medical school graduation that you permit for application?

While there is no limitation in number of years since graduation, other qualifying factors will be instrumental in determining one's admissibility, i.e. years and type of post-graduate clinical experience, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores, etc.

Does Henry Ford Health System sponsor educational visas?

The Department of Anesthesiology sponsors J1 and H1-B visas.

Can I complete my clinical base training (PGY-1) in another AOA/ACGME program and enter directly into the clinical anesthesia years?

Yes.  For those interested in entering directly into the clinical anesthesia years, acceptable CBY experiences in other ACGME/AOA accredited programs include training in internal or emergency medicine, pediatrics, surgery or any of the surgical specialties, OB/GYN, neurology, family medicine, critical care medicine or any combination that is approved by the program director.

Where do your residents go upon completion of residency training?

Aproximately half choose to enhance their subspecialty expertise by completing fellowship training, primarily in the subspecialty areas of cardiothoracic anesthesiology, pain medicine, pediatric anesthesiology, or critical care medicine.  Others enter private practice, group practice or academic practice.    Either way, our residents have access to the top spots available across the country.
