The Section of Sleep Medicine offers a one year fellowship in Sleep Medicine, accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Our academic affiliations are with Wayne State University and the University of Michigan. The fellowship program is integrated with the Henry Ford training programs for Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Otolaryngology. For Pediatric Sleep training we are affiliated with Children's Hospital of Michigan, located a few blocks away.
Fellowship training is centered in our ambulatory Sleep Clinics. Each of three Sleep fellows has six one-half day continuity clinics per week, where they conduct consultations and follow op care for patients assigned to their clinics. They benefit from being exposed to a large number of referred patients, who present with a wide range of sleep disorders. Since the Henry Ford Health System covers a very large segment of the Southwest Michigan population consultations are plentiful. This large patient population provides an exceptional environment for learning the clinical skills required to practice a high quality of Sleep Medicine. In this environment with faculty oversight, our fellows have the opportunity to see complicated and unusual cases of sleep pathology and ask questions leading to new research projects and innovative therapies.
Case discussions and our 10 monthly conferences expand the trainee's basic knowledge of sleep neurobiology and sleep medicine. Daily reading of polysomnograms and other laboratory tests with attendings provides the technical expertise needed to establish and maintain a sleep laboratory.
All fellows are required to participate in on-going or original research projects to graduate from the program. The four research faculty as well as the four physicians serve as mentors for these projects. National meeting presentations and manuscript submissions are anticipated from these activities. Fellows also participate in Section Quality Assurance projects.
Upon completion of our program, fellows are certified as having the knowledge base and clinical skills to independently practice Sleep Medicine. They will be prepared to sit for the new Sleep Boards (All former fellows who took the new boards in 2007 passed).
Performance Evaluation
The Program Director will provide two interval and a final face-to-face evaluation incorporating faculty, staff and patient assessments, as well as results of objective tests and research progress. Performance will be evaluated for all of the six ACGME competencies, as well as Sleep Medicine specific criteria.
